Flower symmetry in Saxifraga revisited

چکیده

Abstract Monosymmetry in flowers has evolved many times from ancestors with polysymmetrical flowers. Flower symmetry characteristics often lack intraspecific variability. The genus Saxifraga represents an exception high variations of floral between and within species even individual plants. Lab-based studies could show that this variation is to some extent caused by the flowers’ response gravity thus varies regularly horizontally vertically oriented Here, we investigate inter- intra-individual flower size, colouration, three species, stellaris , S. rotundifolia paniculata . Flower symmetry and shape in Antirrhinum.

According to their symmetry, flowers are classified as radially symmetrical or bilaterally symmetrical. Bilateral symmetry, which is thought to have evolved from radial symmetry, results from establishment of asymmetry relative to a dorsoventral axis of flowers. Here we consider developmental genetic mechanisms underlying the generation of this asymmetry and how they relate to controls of petal...

Broken symmetry revisited

In general, a physical system consists of a finite or infinite number of degrees of freedom which may or may not interact. The dynamics is prescribed by a set of evolution equations which follow from varying the action with respect to the different degrees of freedom. A symmetry then corresponds to a group of transformations on the space time coordinates and/or the degrees of freedom that leave...

Foundations of Symmetry Breaking Revisited

Puget’s article “On the Satisfiability of Symmetrical Constraint Satisfaction Problems” [Puget, 1993] is widely acknowledged to be one of the founding papers in symmetry breaking (see for example [Flener et al., 2006; Rossi et al., 2006; Walsh, 2006]). To date, Puget’s definition of a valid reduction seems to be the only common ground that all authors on static symmetry breaking constraints agr...

Inferring Rates of Change in Flower Symmetry in Asterid Angiosperms

Discrete, version 1.01b (Pagel, 1997), is a DOS-based program that can be used to estimate individual ancestral values. Discrete was written to test for correlated evolution between twodiscrete characters, andproducing ancestor reconstructions in such away requires several steps. First, Discrete deals with two characters at a time; therefore, for thepurposes of estimating ancestors for a single...

Tales of the unexpected: phylogeography of the arctic-alpine model plant Saxifraga oppositifolia (Saxifragaceae) revisited.

Arctic-alpine biota occupy enormous areas in the Arctic and the northern hemisphere mountain ranges and have undergone major range shifts during their comparatively short history. The origins of individual arctic-alpine species remain largely unknown. In the case of the Purple saxifrage, Saxifraga oppositifolia, an important model for arctic-alpine plants, phylogeographic studies have remained ...
